WHEN SHOULD YOU CALL THE POLICE AFTER AN AUTO ACCIDENT

Smiling police officers

Most claims do not involve the police showing up.  This is usually not a problem but there are certain instances that calling the police is recommended:

  • If there are injuries or safety concerns, always dial 911.

  • If there is a criminal act including car theft, vandalism or hit and run, you should call the police to get a report.  Adjusters often require it and it gives credibility to what happened.

  • If you suspect that the other person is under the influence of alcohol or other substances, you should call the police to make sure that this is documented as a possible cause of the incident.

  • If the other person does not want to provide you with their information including insurance, call the police to see if they can assist you with exchanging information.  Not having all the info you need, could affect you down the line.

Besides calling the police, we also recommend getting pictures of the scene of the accident as well as getting the name and phone numbers of witnesses.
