Don't leave your loved ones with a mess – plan for the future with a WILL and/or TRUST. These options offer peace of mind, knowing your wishes will be honored and your family protected. A WILL is your voice after you're gone, outlining who receives your belongings. But, without a TRUST, your WILL goes through probate, a public and often lengthy court process. A TRUST bypasses this step, and it's faster and more private. It also gives you more control on how your belongings are given to your loved ones.

You can get a WILL by itself and save some money but it often works best when combined with a TRUST. Your WILL names guardians for your children and expresses your final wishes, while your TRUST describes how your inheritance is distributed. You can also add an Advance Directive to a WILL and TRUST that essentially tells your loved ones how to care for you medically in case you are not able to make decisions yourself.

There are different ways to do a WILL and/or TRUST. There are online options such as Freewill and LegalZoom. You can also find a local advisor or estate planning attorney that can help you with this process. My wife and I did a “Special Needs Trust” because of our disabled daughter.
